Welsh Dragons

First Impression

Good design and ideas, poor way of putting things together…

REVIEW

Track Design

For some reason, Welsh Dragons make me feel depressed. I’m not sure why, but I believe it has something to do with the sort of open - or at least “lonely” - scenery combined with a design that leaves a sort of “empty” feeling (partly due to some longer, open sections).

That doesn’t mean the design is bad though. Actually, it contains a lot of cool jumps, stunts, twists and turns – some even quite innovative – but still, it feels like there should be something… more.

As a whole, the design is very interesting, and especially some cool off-road parts appealed to me a lot (these parts should also do good for some WR hunting). What’s there is very good, it’s what’s missing that makes the track feel, well, average.

Scenery

The scenery – or lack of it – is what really brings out that “depressing” feeling in me. Sure, there is scenery in the form of gray stone (rokcs, mountains/hills and stone walls), and just as with the track design it is fairly good, but again it’s like something’s missing. Some trees and buildings is what’s needed.

MediaTracker

Intro: Very nice with a sort of “mystery feeling” to it. However, it fails to properly show the track, and it’s way too slow!

Oh, and it also introduces what could be an excellent story for the track, but in no way is this continued neither in-game nor in the outro :(

In-game: Name introduction of who made what part of the track.

Outro: Excellent camera angles and very nice effects and display of credits. On the downside, trails have been over-used – they do look cool at most angles, but especially when the camera is right behind the vehicle trails are NOT something you should include!

Overall, very good MT but which leaves the feeling of something missing…

Rating: 77%

Originality

There are quite a few original sections in Welsh Dragons: parts of the jumps and stunts in the design, the way the scenery is put together, some of the MT work and simply the overall feeling of the track. However, while these do bring out something new, they are after all just minor details.

Rating: 69%

Fun Factor

At first: Depressing! Then: Quite fun! Finally: Old and boring! Very good entertainment, but unfortunately not that long lasting and you’ll never get to that “OMG” or “agin, again” phase. The “new” in the track is quite appealing, but considering the feeling of something missing and the fact that – looking at the big picture – we’ve seen most of it before, the fun soon dies out…

Rating: 71%

Summary

Everything – from the design to the MT work – is very good indeed! There’s a lot of interesting stuff, some things even quite fresh and innovative, but at the same time there’s a feeling something’s missing. Mainly the scenery is responsible for this, but also the unfinished story in the MT work and the occational lack in design adds to it.

All in all a good track with some interesting ideas but which ends up feeling “unfunished”.

Final Rating: 70% StarStarStar (Good)

The following tag(s) were given to this track:

  • Tag - Underrated Underrated - For the unique feeling and after all not that bad design, the track does, despite a decent amount of awards already, deserver more at TMX.

  • Tag - TimeAttack Time - Rally is always good for WR hunts, but this track is even better – great skid sections and off-road parts allow for some great time improvements.

great review Jozii, not bad rating, and then again, it is my 1st ever duo, so i didnt know what to expect^^, the story bit in the intro, well, it did my best, since i’m not that good at intro’s really, and sorry for the ‘depressing’ feeling, i should’ve got rid of those massive castle walls, and some of the clip end parts were on purpose, for a lil more of a ‘bumpy rally’ feeling

70% is ok, and already were starting to make our next duo track, Outrun! :)
